Historical Information

In the late 18th century, the only church influences on Brier and Long Islands were Roman Catholic and Episcopalian. Enoch Towner brought an end to this in 1797. Towner was followed by Peter Crandall in 1809. After Crandall's passing in 1838, Rev. John Chipman Morse stepped into pastor the area in 1841. The division of the First Digby Neck Church resulted in the formation of two fields. The First Digby Neck Church consisted of Rossway, Waterford, and Centreville, while the Second Digby Neck consisted of Little River and Tiddville. The existing church structure at Little River was dedicated in 1876. Morse was the first pastor to nurture it with pastoral care with the help of Rev. W.L. Parker and Rev. J. H. Saunders of Digby. In addition, land was purchased from George Denton in 1858 for 7 pounds and 10 shillings to be used for a burying ground and meeting house. Dr. John Chipman Morse preached the dedication service in 1876.
