Historical Information

Elder Enoch Towner preached in the New Tusket area during 1797. At an association meeting in 1799, Elder Towner was ordained and the proceedings for the organizing of the Sissiboo Baptist Church began. At this time there were no houses of worship in the area. The earliest references are to a church structure called the "Tabernacle". This structure is generally regarded as being the first structure to serve the membership of New Tusket and Sissiboo Churches. This structure stood until 1899. The church body was instituted in 1799 and lasted until 1843 when the founding of the New Tusket Baptist Church took place. At this time the Sissiboo Church was divided into three separate churches: New Tusket, St. Mary's Bay, and Joggins. The first church structure was erected in New Tusket in 1849.
