Historical Information

The Baptist Church congregation at Digby was formally organized in 1839 although its roots run back to Enoch Towner. John Roop was one of the seven charter members of the county's first Baptist church. In 1841, the church was received into the fellowship of the Nova Scotia Baptist Association. Two structures preceded the one in which the congregation worships today. Both were outgrown by growing membership. The present structure built in 1876 was the result of efforts from a segment of the Church of England which seceded from that denominational body. Their new organization was entitled the Reformed Episcopal Church. In 1885, the Baptists bought and renovated this structure for their own house of worship, which was opened and dedicated January 10, 1886. In later years, additions of a pipe organ and church hall were made. A personage was constructed beside the church edifice in 1890.
