Historical Information
From 1927 to 1940, Rev. C.L. Chute was pastor of the United Baptist pastorate which included the outer limits of Digby Neck. Rev. Chute began to hold services for the people at East Ferry every second week. In 1955, ministers of the Reformed Baptist denomination began holding meetings in East Ferry under the leadership of Gerald Mackinnon. Mackinnon was an able carpenter and under his guidance construction began on a place of worship. The structure was dedicated in 1958. In later years, the church became known as the East Ferry Wesleyan Church due to a change in denominational structure. In 1971, as a result of poor attendance and membership, the church gave up their name. Allen Gibson, in “Churches by the Sea” states that in 1978 the community and congregation of East Ferry voted to accept the invitation of the Little River and Sandy Cove Baptist churches to become part of the Digby Neck Second Field. Later, Gibson states, that the church at East Ferry could be identified as a community church with a United Baptist pastor, as no formal congregational organization existed at the time.
