Historical Information

Prior to 1854, members of the Port George United Baptist Church shared a meetinghouse with local Methodists. At that point, there was no regular pastoral leadership at Port George, however, many men served the charge such as: Richard Cunningham, Robert Dickie, Ingraham Bill, and layman Skinner. Although no building was erected in Port George before 1854, Baptist work was ongoing in connection with the church at Moshers Corner, which is located about a half-mile west of the present Meeting House at Port George. In 1854, Rev Ring, the pastor at Bridgetown, made a business trip to Port George which resulted in his assignment as pastor of the congregation there. In 1861, it was decided that the work in the Nictaux field was too extensive for one minister, thus, the Port George congregation was dissolved by mutual consent and they joined with the Nictaux congregation to form a new church in Middleton. This new church was entitled the Pine Grove Baptist Church, with its first pastor being Rev William Porter. Through the efforts of Capt. James Slocomb, the people of Port George gathered timber for a new church structure. In 1887, after two long years of work, the church was completed at the hands of builder Wallace Whitman of Lawrencetown and the land was formally deeded to the trustees of the Port George United Baptist Church by James and Mary Slocomb. On October 23, 2011 an evening “Celebration of Life for the Baptists of Port George and Mount Hanley” service was held, which led to the decommissioning of both church buildings. Both buildings were later sold for development as private dwellings.
