Historical Information

Allen Gibson, in “Churches by the Sea”, suggests that Rev. Richard Cunningham was the pioneer of Baptist work in the Port Lorne area. Cunningham became the pastor at nearby Chute’s Cove, a community now known as Hampton. In the wake of a revival, a fellowship was organized in 1835 and given the name Wilmot Mountain Baptist Church. In 1835, a place of worship opened near the mountain crest and was known as Mount Rose. This structure was built in the meetinghouse style. In 1856, as homes were built closer to the shore, a new church building was also constructed closer to the shore. This site was originally known as Port Williams but became known as Port Lorne.
