Historical Information

The Briggs Corner United Baptist Church was built in 1906 and served the region until the late twentieth century, after 1974. This church was typical for its time in terms of style and architectural detailing. The church had a three-bay façade on the gable end, with a centrally placed tower, with a four-sided cap that had a point on the top. This church had a bell, with vents on all four sides to allow the sound of the bell to carry. The church had four rectangular windows on either side. This church was in Gothic Revival style. The steeple was of the most striking features of this structure and appears to have had the belfry added later due to part of a slanted roof being visible just below where the bell sat.

The main body of the church was a one-and-a-half storey structure, that appears to have been in the meeting house style, a common style among Protestant congregations in early to mid-nineteenth century Atlantic Canada. This style is often characterized by its small and rather plain facility, with no steeple, and gothic embellishments. The front entrance was often on the gable end, with either two entrances, one on the left and right sides of the front façade, one meant for the men and the other for women; or a centrally placed doorway. The steeple structure was built separately from the main body of the building. Little information could be found on this structure as well as photos, as this church is no longer in existence. However, one photo is a recent scaled-down replica mounted on a concrete pad. The other is the actual church building at Briggs Corner. Briggs Corner Baptist Church was no longer standing in the later part of the twentieth century and is believed to have been demolished between the 1970’s - 1980’s.
