Historical Information
The former New Cumberland United Baptist Church is a unique and striking piece of built heritage in Lunenburg County. Many rural Baptist churches in Atlantic Canada built around this time were constructed in a symmetrical design, usually with a centrally placed tower on the gable end of the structure as well as in the Meeting House style, like this church. The Meeting House style of church was a common style among Protestant congregations in early to mid-nineteenth century Atlantic Canada. This style is often characterized by its small and rather plain facility, with no steeple, and gothic embellishments. The front entrance was often on the gable end, with either two entrances, one on the left and right sides of the front façade, one meant for the men and the other for women; or a centrally placed doorway. This church has a small entranceway centrally placed on the gable end that appears to be original to the construction.
This church appears to have been constructed in the vernacular style, with unique straight point windows on either side of the structure and near the peak on the gable end. This building appears to have had many renovations over the years, including a new steel roof, new wooden shingles, windows repaired, and foundation fixed. The church has been sold, as there was a dwindling congregation that has merged with other local congregations in the region. The building is now used for alternative purposes.
