Historical Information

Shortly after the congregation was formed in 1853, they constructed this building. Coles Island Baptist Church is built in the Meeting House style, a common style among Protestant congregations in early to mid-nineteenth century Atlantic Canada. This style is often characterized by its small and rather plain facility, with no steeple, and gothic embellishments. The front entrance was often on the gable end, with either two entrances, one on the left and right sides of the front façade, one meant for the men and the other for women; or a centrally placed doorway as is the case here.

This church is rather plain in terms of style and has hints of Gothic Revival architectural embellishments. On each side of the structure are three gothic revival windows with label hooded mouldings. The front façade is located on the gable end and has a centrally placed entranceway that is one story. Above this entranceway is a Gothic Revival window situated near the peak. A more recent addition has been built on the back of the church, containing a vestry and kitchen space. This church is typical for its time in terms of size and style. The church has retained much of its original features, including wooden shingles on the walls and much of the architectural embellishments. Originally, this church would have had wooden shingles on the roof; however, now it has black asphalt shingles.
