Historical Information
Codys Baptist Church is one of the oldest buildings in Codys, New Brunswick. Once a vibrant and eventful building, there are no longer services, and the building sits dormant. On May 18, 2008, the church celebrated its 185th anniversary with Rev. David Taylor officiating.
Due to a decline in membership, and the community being without a full-time pastor for many years, many of the members of this congregation now attend services at the Apohaqui United Baptist Church.
Codys United Baptist Church is built in the Gothic Revival Style. The structure has a three-bay façade on the gable end, with a centrally placed tower. Each outer bay on the front façade has a Gothic Revival style window, as well as the outer walls of the centrally placed tower. This church has many striking features, including a gable on either side of the structure, containing large, ornate stained-glass windows. All the windows on the structure have hooded label mouldings. On the top of the tower, there is an enclosed area with vents on all four sides to allow the sound of the bell to carry. Some of the most eye-catching architectural embellishments are located on the steeple of this church.
On the rear of the structure there appears to have been a later addition, containing a vestry and perhaps a kitchen area. The building appears to have had some renovations over the years including a new foundation, making the church taller. The date of 1823 is quoted consistently as the date of construction for this structure; however, the size and style of the structure put this church’s date later, circa 1850-1860.
