Historical Information

The Baptist church body in Paradise was established in 1810 and originally known as part of the Wilmot and Upper Granville Baptist Church. Later, after 1870, the church was destroyed by fire. Building committee records dating 1875-1892, confirm Allen Gibson’s account that construction on this church began in 1876. Previous to 1876, the members of the Paradise congregation worshipped at the Wilmot Baptist Church. Construction was completed on the church structure in 1882, replacing the South Meeting House that was originally built on the lot in 1880. The structure was designed by architect James Bond Kinney of Yarmouth. Construction of the building is credited to John Bowlby of Israel Bowlby & Company and Oldham Whitman of Bridgetown completed the brick and masonry work. By 2019 the Paradise church building had been sold and the congregation was meeting in their West Paradise Baptist Mission building. In the spring of 2019 consideration was given to transferring Paradise membership to the Lawrencetown Baptist Church.
