Historical Information
In 1813, the Baptist Society of Nictaux held a meeting to discuss the construction of a house of worship, which was soon built. However, by 1840, the congregation had outgrown the first meeting house and the original structure was moved one half mile west and used as a schoolhouse. It was later moved to the south side of the road and used as a barn for several years before its destruction in 1961. A new church structure was completed in 1840 on the site of the original church structure. George Edgar Hutchinson was the likely architect for the second house of worship. During the ministry of the Rev. W.B. Bradshaw, the Church at Nictaux underwent extensive renovations in which a second floor was added to the building. Record books indicate that the structure was destroyed by fire in 1899. Consequently, during this displacement phase, the congregation met for worship in the Methodist meeting house at Nictaux Falls. This took place under the pastoral leadership of the Rev. J.W. Brown. The third church building at Nictaux was dedicated in 1899. In 1906 a ten-acre parcel of woodland was purchased on the south-east corner of highways 10 and 201 across the road from the church and became known as “The Church Woods.” Throughout 1955-1956 the structure of the Nictaux United Baptist Church was renovated. On January 23, 1975 the church decided to build a “Christian Family Centre” on the north-west corner of “the Church Woods” property. In the fall of 1978, a Service of Dedication was held in the CFC. On March 3, 2013 Rev. Bill McLeod conducted the concluding worship service in the 114-year-old building. The following Sunday he led the worship service in the renovated and enlarged CFC. By December 5, 2015 the vacant church building had been demolished.
