Historical Information

The Calvinist Baptist Church at Beaver River was originally constructed in 1859 but was later destroyed by fire, when struck by lightning in 1879. This Calvinist Baptist church served the villages of Beaver River and Green Cove (now Port Maitland). After this original church was destroyed by fire the congregation decided to build churches both in Beaver River and in Port Maitland. The current Beaver River Baptist Church was dedicated in 1886, and still stands today (2021).

The photo attached to this profile is that of the later Baptist church in Beaver River built in 1886. This church is a large wooden church with a centrally placed steeple on the gable end. This steeple appears to be cylindrical and originally had an open cage part near the peak of the roof where the bell is situated. The steeple pitched roof, architectural details, and round Gothic windows, suggest that this church was built in the Gothic style, a style very popular among Baptists and Methodists in the nineteenth century Atlantic Canada.
