Historical Information

The Avonport Baptist congregation originally was a mission of the Falmouth Baptist Church, but in 1861 the Falmouth church released the Avonport folk to join the Brooklyn (now Lockhartville) Stoney Hill Baptist Church, which was organized in 1841 as a mission of the Hantsport Baptist Church. In 1863 the Avonport Baptists joined in the construction of the Union Meeting House of Avonport, officially known as the “Uniont Baptist Methodist Church” which was located on the site of the current church property (2021). This building was 37’ x 27’ and was completed in 1864. The services were performed for Methodist, Free Baptists (from 1867), Regular Baptists, and for a while the Church of England. Its basement in 1864 also housed the public school students due to the poor condition of their building across the road. It was formally referred to as the “Union Baptist Methodist Church” and shortened to “Union Church.” In 1973 there was talk of repairing the old building, but the decision was to build a completely new building. In 1978 the 115th anniversary of the old building was celebrated. The last service was held on July 22, 1979 at which time the Baptists began using their new church building where on October 7, 1979 the cornerstone was inserted, and a service of dedication was held. This new church was built just east of the old church..

The Avonport Baptist Church was constructed in 1978 with a roof with a protruding entranceway on the gable end. Above the front entrance way is a white cross sitting near the peak of the roof. The double doors on the front of the building are set up high off the front yard and have many stairs leading up to them. In 1984 a steeple was installed above the entrance, and memorial stain glass windows were added to the structure The current pastor (2021) of the Avonport Baptist Church is Rev. Brian Keezer.
