Historical Information

Located on the south side of the Russia Rd., in the vault near the east end of the road sits the Black Rock Baptist Church. This church began in 1864 on land purchased from Peter and Mary Burns. Mr. Elmer Dan was hired to do the remodelling of the structure in 1902 with more renovation work being done in 1928 when C. R. Bowlby donated paint and shingles. In 1953 an addition of four rooms to the back of the church for Sunday school was added, accommodating the growth of members to the church. In 2007 a well was drilled, and a sewage system was installed for the kitchen and washroom, which were added. The front of the structure appears to be relatively unchanged since its construction in 1864. The single storey wooden structure has a medium pitched side gable roof and has modified Gothic revival style windows. Above the front entrance is another modified Gothic revival style window. This church has an architectural design common with communities across the Annapolis Valley and is very similar to some of the other churches situated on the North Mountain such as the Mount Hanley Baptist Church and the Mount Rose Baptist Church.
