Historical Information
In August 1859 a church was built at Black River. Along with the church the community also hosted Sunday school and the youth program for many years. The community decided to host a minister from Gaspereau to preach twice a month. By 1912 the Gaspereau minister was preaching at Black River, Forest Hill, Gaspereau, Greenfield, Morine Mountain, Newtonville, and Wallbrook. In many instances this minister would preach at each of these churches in one day. So, in April of 1914 Greenfield and Black River were set apart. Alexander Gibson was ordained as the first minister on April 14, 1914. Since then, the congregation depended on theology students from Acadia University, with 27 of the students preaching at this church between 1914 and 1964. In June 2010 the church permanently closed its doors, the building was sold in 2016, and the congregation disbanded. The church structure is a rather plain building and has an uncluttered front façade on the gable end. There is a simple curved window set near the peak, and double front doors. The steeple is very short and has four spires on the top.
