Historical Information
Built in 1894 as the Noel Baptist Church, the building sat on the south side of Highway 215 on the current property of Garnet & Vicki Burns (2021). It was the only church in the community to have a belfry. It closed in 1929 and remained vacant for several years. It was revitalized briefly by a group of Presbyterians from in and around the Kennetcook area who were disinterested in joining the congregation of the newly created St. James United Church in Kennetcook after the church union of 1925. The Presbyterians held services for several years in the church building, but with the lack of a full-time minister and a small congregation, the church again closed. The Presbyterians rallied again and in 1950 purchased the church building and moved it to its current location on White Settlement Road in Noel Road. The church was rededicated as St. James Presbyterian Church, which it remains today. The church structure when constructed had hints of the gothic revival and classical styles, with its arched windows and open-cage belfry. The belfry on the top of the structure has been removed. New windows have been installed to mimic the originals. Siding has been applied, covering much of the original woodwork. Replacing what used to be a gothic window in the middle of the belfry is a black wooden cross on boards.
