Historical Information
Keirstead Mountain Baptist Church is believed to have been built around 1838, based on information provided by the Millstream United Baptist Pastorate.
This church is an early example of one that was constructed in the Meeting House style. This style is characterized by a 1 ½ storey wood-frame construction, with either one or two entranceways located on the gable end. One can tell a lot about the beliefs of a congregation by examining their architecture. Often when there are two doors, one located on each side of the front facade, one door was used by the men, and the other by the women. This was a common style among the Baptists of Atlantic Canada throughout the nineteenth century.
This church is almost identical in size and architectural details to the Snider Mountain Baptist Church, also in this pastorate. It is likely that the carpenters used one of them as a template to build the other, or possibly even built both. This church, much like Snider Mountain, features three large, pointed Gothic Revival windows on each of the eave-sides and a smaller gothic window close to the peak on the gable end. Both facilities feature an enclosed entryway as well.
This church appears to have been renovated extensively over the course of its history, including being situated on a new poured concrete foundation, which allows for recreational and kitchen space in the basement. The building features a large wheelchair ramp on the front, which goes up to a set of double doors, positioned on the side of the entryway, rather than on the front facade.
This church was formerly part of the Millstream United Baptist Pastorate, which initially included Keirstead Mountain Baptist Church, Head of Millstream United Baptist Church, Snider Mountain Baptist Church, Collina United Baptist Church, and formerly Lower Millstream, prior to it being sold. Now this pastorate contains only Keirstead Mountain Baptist Church and the Head of Millstream United Baptist Church (2023).
