Historical Information
The story of the Calvary United Baptist Church had its beginnings as a break away from The Crossing - St. John’s, formerly West End Baptist which was a church-plant-site from the original First Baptist Church, St. Johns, Newfoundland.
The Calvary United Baptist Church was formed in 1994, which soon after forming constructed their first facility. The congregation used to meet on Kenmount Road, however, they sold their original building, which is now a bridal shop. Between the sale of their original building, and purchasing their current (2023) facility, they met in the Seventh Day Adventist building. Around 2022 the congregation bought the former Catholic Church “Mary Queen of the World” facility that was built in 1983.
This church was constructed in the mid-century-modern design, with the exterior being brick and mortar. Like other churches of this time, the closer one gets to the peak of the roof the more overhang there is. The gable end of the building that faces the road, is broken up into three bays, with the central bay having a striking medallion window, positioned near the peak of the roof. Another striking feature about this building visible on the eave-side is that the pitch of the roof increases as you travel to the front facade (gable end. The eave-side of the building has eight rectangular vinyl windows, positioned on either side. Another striking feature of the eave-side is the original mid-century-modern double sets of doors, inset into the building.
The basement of the building contains office, recreational, and kitchen space. It is impressive the amount of original architectural detailing this facility has maintained over the years.
