In 1834 the Lower Granville pastorate granted John Woodsworth of Litchfield a license to preach. Later, in 1840, Benjamin Reed and Ebenezer Sproule were appointed as deacons. The meetinghouse at Port Wade, “Mariner’s Section”, was built at about the same time. This date is supported by a history of the Lower Granville church by Mrs. Roy Casey. Isaiah Wallace began as pastor in 1861 and continued for the following decade. Allen Gibson, in “Churches by the Sea”, adds that the church structure was expanded in 1966.
