Historical Information
Apple River United Baptist Church was formed in 1908, the same year they constructed this church building. The church is typical for its time in terms of size and style, and is a prime example in a shift in Atlantic Baptist architecture during the early part of the twentieth century. This shift in style moved away from a typical symmetrical church design, usually with the tower centrally placed on the gable end. This church has the tower located on the corner of the gable end and eave-side of the building, with the main entrance located in this part of the structure.
The church appears to still maintain many of its original architectural features on the exterior of the building, including ornate eyebrow trim on the windows, and gingerbread mouldings at the top of the tower, near the peak of the four-sided steeple. The majority of the building, however, is covered in white vinyl siding, and the roof in black asphalt shingles, both materials not original to the building’s construction.
Some of the most striking features of this building are the large, gothic stained-glass window centrally placed on the gable end, the small square window on the front facade near the peak, and the four, one-over-one rectangular windows found on each of the eave-side of the structure. The building appears to have a side door that was added later, and contains a wheelchair ramp, on the left eave-side of the building.
The placement of this building is on a country road, somewhat near the road, with houses about the same age surrounding it.
