Historical Information
The Lewisporte United Baptist Church congregation began in the 1980s. Gus Manuel had immense influence in starting the church in Lewisporte. The initial beginnings of this church started by meeting with the Gander Baptist Church. They then decided to buy their original building, which was already built in the 1980’s. They soon sold this first structure and bought their last building (2023). An interesting fact about their initial structure is that they were able to sell this building and the land and buy their last building on Road to the Isles debt free.
This congregation lasted until 2022. Due to the strains of the COVID-19 pandemic, the congregation closed. Although there were conversations with the Crossing Church, the Lewisport congregation sold their building, and gave the funds to the other Baptist congregations in Newfoundland and Labrador.
The last structure to serve the congregation was well maintained up until the end. It has new black asphalt shingles installed in 2021, new flooring inside, and new vinyl windows and doors.
The building is typical of buildings built in the 1990s with a barnlike, rounded roof, exterior. The gable end that faces the road features four gothic revival like windows. The main entrance is centrally placed on the eave side of the building, and also has a barnlike rounded roof. The basement features a multi use recreational space. On the main level there are exposed stained timber beams, and the church had moveable chairs, in order to provide multiple uses for the sanctuary space.
