Historical Information

In 1930, two ministers, Rev. J. B. Daggett and Dr. J. J. Sidey came to Kingston and organized the Kingston Bible College. In 1933, the first building was constructed on land given by Mrs. Amanda Baker. This building was later destroyed by fire in 1962. Early in 1934, the connection with the United Baptist denomination ended and this congregation was re-organized and joined with similar Baptist congregations in Kingston, Melvern Square, and Lower Aylesford as a pastorate. . Members of the newly constituted body met or worship in the college building in Greenwood Village as well as Lower Aylesford, Melvern Square and in Kingston.

On May 28th, 1962, a re-organization drew together the people of the three earlier congregations to form the Bible Baptist Church. A brick church was soon built measuring about 80’ by 30’. This new facility is located on Bridge Street in the Village of Greenwood. Due to a growing congregation the church was expanded in 1971 with two new wings, designed to make the church form the shape of a cross.

The facility built in 1962, is typical for its time in terms of style, with a low-pitched roof, and windows and the front entrance on the gable end. The most catching feature of the building are the large glass panes on the front façade with the front entrance directly below it. The front of the building is broken into three bays, large brick walls on either side. This building has large rectangular windows on the main level, with smaller windows directly below them on the basement level and ornamental steel set between these two windows. On the central structure, on the peak of the roof, there is a steel saddleback steeple, which appears to be original to the building in 1962. On this front façade there is also the words “Baptist Church” written in brass letters. On the right side of the building (South) there is a drive-thru car port, which appears to have been where the main entrance was and allowed people to park behind the building.

In 2002, the Turning Point Baptist Church formed and disbanded from the Greenwood Bible Baptist Church. This congregation uses the King James Authorized Version of the Bible. Turning Point Baptist Church ministered in Greenwood until February 2014 when they left the leased property and moved to Lake Paul on Aylesford Road. They began holding services in the Lake Paul and Lake George Community Centre in late February 2014.
