Historical Information
The congregation of the Cornerstone (Stratford) United Baptist Church was formed in 2006/2007 with their first service being held on Thanksgiving Sunday. The first 6 months of this congregation meeting in their building was led by Dr. Stewert Dockendorff and Phillip Woodworth, who at the time was the youth pastor. After this Steve Cogswell became the pastor and has served for 12 years (2021).
This building is uniquely positioned with its front facade facing the Trans-Canada highway; however, the church is not accessible from this road and must be accessed down the road. The exterior of this building almost mimics a style common in the 1990ās to early 2000ās with the smoothly arched window, boxy design, and white vinyl siding. One of the most eye-catching features of the exterior of the building is the stained wooden cross that is integrated into the architectural design of the āLā on the front. The back of the building, where the main entrance is, is rather plain, with very little architectural detailing. The outside in general is rather plain, and has a medium pitched roof covered in asphalt shingles.
The interior is very open, and the sanctuary is on the main (second level) using about half of the upstairs space. The inside contains more architectural detailings and designs common with churches in the mid-twenty-first century. The most eye-catching details are the use of modern seating, a moveable barn-board covered baptism font, and a hand-hewed beam cross on the wall.
This church is part of the Cornerstone Baptist Churches in P.E.I. including Cornerstone Montague, Cornwall, and Stratford.
