Historical Information

In July 1886, a meeting was held in the Alexandra Baptist Church for the purpose of raising funds to build a Baptist church in Hazelbrook. It took nine years for the congregation to decide on where to position the church. The decision was made March 12, 1895, at a meeting of the Baptist conference to have a church in Alexandra and Hazelbrook. It was decided at this meeting that this church at Hazelbrook would fall under the guidance and leadership of the minister in Alexandra. The Hazelbrook Baptist Church officially opened on Dec 27, 1896 and the Reverend D. Price officiated. However, a year later in 1897, Hazelbrook decided to exercise their autonomy, so left their union with Alexandra.

This church was designed by the same architect as the Summerside Baptist Church in Prince County, PEI, George E. Baker. A plan of church popular with Baker was the Akron Plan/Style, which originated in Akron, Ohio. The style is characterized by a cluster of rooms surrounding a central office or sanctuary in a religious building, with movable partitions.

The architectural style and layout of both Summerside and Hazelbrook are almost identical. This church was known in the area as having beautiful stained-glass windows. This church was known as the “Highland Church” by locals, referring to the settlers that came from the Highlands of Scotland and settled in the area. The Alexandra congregation was referred to as the “Lowlanders” and the Lowland Church.

This building has been demolished. When the church was being disassembled the entrance and steeple portion of the church along with three 16' wide sections of the wall with large Gothic window, were moved to a new seaside location and assembled in a smaller building with high walls, loft and rooftop deck, and known as “the Steeple Cottage.”
