Historical Information
The Gospel Light Baptist Church formed in December of 2017. When they first met, they did not have a building and met in the homes of parishioners or the pastor. The congregation has been under the leadership of the same minister (2021), pastor Robert Smith, since its formation.
The congregation was looking for a suitable building to house their congregation, and in 2018 they purchased the former Emmanuel United Church in Amherst. This building was constructed in 1919 and has the front entrance on the gable end of the structure. The steeple is positioned on the side of the gable end and contains the front entrance for the sanctuary. There are four large windows on either side of the structure and two of the same style and size on the back piece. The back piece of the church structure is believed to be original to the church design. The bell in the steeple is said to have come off of a ship that was in the area.
When the Gospel Light Baptist Church took over this building, they replaced the original pews with modern chairs. The building has a new rubber shingle roof and has since had the upper portion that contains the bell enclosed with siding, with vents to allow the sound to still be heard. To access the main sanctuary, you must walk up several stairs at the front of the structure or take the wheelchair ramp on the back āLā.
