Historical Information
The Berwick church started in 1828 in Pleasant Valley, but in 1858 the congregation decided to move to Berwick and build a structure on Commercial Street. The church was known as Second Cornwallis but was changed to the Berwick Baptist Church in 1890. The name Cornwallis came from the church being in the Cornwallis Township. The same year the building was constructed a vestry was built on the ground floor of the church. The steeple was removed before 1896, probably because of structural issues associated with it. In 1958 an annex was added, and a front entrance area on the front of the church.
From November 1, 1938, to February 18, 1940, the Berwick Baptist Church granted the United Church the privilege of holding services in the Baptist church while they built their church.
Some of the most catching features of this structure are the sheer height of the church, with its open cage belltower, making it one of the tallest century buildings in the town, and its large medallion window located on the front of the building above the front entranceway. Two large gothic stained-glass windows are situated on the front façade of the building, on either side of the medallion window. The sanctuary is set up off the ground, and can be reached by stairs inside the church. Underneath the sanctuary is an office, classroom, and washroom .
