Historical Information
A “Union Meeting House,” 37’ x 27’ was built in 1863. The services were performed for Methodists, Free Baptists, RegularBaptists, and for a while the Church of England. It was formally referred to as the “Union Baptist Methodist Church” and shortened to “Union Church;” it continued until 1900. In 1978 the 115th anniversary of the building was celebrated. The last service was held on July 22, 1979 at which time the new church began holding services. This new church is known as the Avonport Baptist Church. This new church was built just east of the old church and in 1984 a steeple and memorial stain glass windows were added to the structure.
The original structure had ornate woodwork across the exterior of the building. One of the most catching features of the church (built 1863) is the open cage bellfry located on the peak, near the front of the building. Three rectangular windows are located on either side of the structure. There is an ornate centrally placed front entranceway, pilasters on the corner boards and return eaves.
