Historical Information
The congregation of the Newellton Baptist Church was formed in 1906. The congregation was served by at least three structures, one built in the early twentieth century, another around 1953, and the one that stands in 2021, built in 1973. The structure we see today (2021) is a one-storey wooden structure that is in the shape of an “L.” The main sanctuary sits vertically to the road, and the extension on the right side, sitting horizontally to the road, has recreational space in it. On the front of the building there is a small extension that houses an entranceway that leads to the sanctuary.
One of the most unique features of this church is the wooden sash windows, that are 8 over 4. 6 out of the 8 glass panes on the tops of these windows have orange stained glass, very popular from the 1970s. A small saddleback steeple was placed on the main part of the structure and has speakers on it for playing music or bell sounds. The interior walls are covered in panelling and the ceiling is covered with particle board ceiling tiles and appears to have its original light fixtures from the 1970s.
This church was formally known as the Newellton United Baptist Church, but the congregation dropped “United” from their name, just as the United Baptist Convention did. The congregation is currently (2021) affiliated with the Canadian Baptists of Atlantic Canada.
