Historical Information

The church at Karsdale can be traced back to the Baptist Church at Lower Granville, which began under the leadership of Rev. Frank Beattie in 1878. Rev. Beattie settled in the Lower Granville field and it was from that pastorate that the building at Karsdale commenced. In 1879 the construction of the building began.

The first Baptist congregation in Karsdale dates to 1780 with the great reform of Congregationalism, known as the “New Light” movement, which gave birth to the Baptist cause in this part of Nova Scotia. The dominating figure of this movement was Henry Alline of Falmouth, Alline first visiting Karsdale in June 1777. The organization of a Lower Granville United Baptist Church congregation was first done on March 10, 1780.
In 1963 this church became self supporting from the Home Mission Board. Prior to this it was receiving financial aid from the Home Mission Board of the United Baptist Convention of the Maritime Provinces since 1943.
Pastors of the church between 1822 – 1832 were Lic. Joshua Cogswell and Rev. David Harris.
Some notable individuals that visited this church in the eighteenth century include Thomas Handley Chipman and Rev Henry Alline.
This church was either repurposed, torn down or demolished between 1985 and 2000.
