Historical Information

A congregation of the Lower Sandy Point United Baptist Church dates to 1856. This structure is the second church to have served the congregation. The land for the placement of this meeting house was given by Edward Watts of Sandy Point in 1908, and the deed was later registered March 12, 1912. The dedication service for the church was held Sunday, October 15, 1908 on an “exceedingly stormy” morning, according to records from the church. The weather was reportedly so bad that people living far away from the church were unable to attend. The minister that officiated the service was Rev. Ward Fisher who served the congregation prior to the construction of this building and stayed here until 1910.

This church was a single storey wooden structure with a side bell tower. Positioned on the corner of the building is the square tower which is topped with a modest bell-shaped spire. The belfry has louvered openings and a decorative skirting that separates the belfry from the top of the tower. The church had two large double doors in the front of the tower with the sanctuary on the left, the vestry to the back. Along the wing of the building are four long rectangular windows, four panes over four. In each gable end of the structure there were two more of these windows and one of these windows in the corners formed by the building and the tower. In 2006 the interior was gutted, and it has since been demolished.
