Historical Information

Prior to the construction of this Baptist church congregants met at the school in the community, but it was torn down a few years before the construction of this church. This compelled the congregation to build a new place of worship in 1889. The first recorded service in this church was May 10, 1890, with the Reverend Cahoon officiating. These records indicate that several years after this buildings construction there was no regular pastor.

In 1947 this building burned down in a forest fire that swept through the region that also left many residents in the area homeless.

Architecturally this church was described as a long building with a tall steeple. Prior to its destruction it was discovered that the steeple was rotten, and it was removed, being replaced with a decorative railing that some remarked looked like a baby’s crib. When entering the building one directly entered the sanctuary through a small porch at the base of the tower.

This building was replaced with another structure given the same name that was dedicated 7, September 1952. This new structure was a single storey building with a steep roof and a short square tower that projected from the centre front. This structure was architecturally very similar to the Union Church in Lower Ohio. An octagonal steeple rose from the hipped roof of the tower, and there were lancet windows on either side of the store on the front façade. Three more of these windows were situated on either side of the building. In 1998 the building was torn down as it did not pass an inspection by the building inspector. The windows and woodwork were removed and installed in the Grace Baptist Church in Shelburne. Along with these elements the pews, pulpit and altar rail were also moved to this church
