Historical Information

In 1869 the government granted 100 acres of land to Knowlesville Baptist Church. Once the land was cleared, the frame was made of timbers hewn by hand. The sides were boarded and the roof was finished with hand-shaved shingles. Seats were simply planks placed on blocks of wood.

In 1911, a new cement foundation was added. In the 1920s, a bell from Hartland was installed for call to worship – the same bell is used today. The 70th anniversary of the church was held in 1932. Most people at that time travelled to church by horse and it was decided to build a 60’ x 22’ horse shed.

In 1947 the church underwent a restoration inside and out. In 1968, a Sunday School room was added in part of the church basement. That year, each family from the congregation donated two gallons of paint and helped to repaint the church.

In 1982 an extension of three Sunday school rooms, an office and a bathroom were added, as well as an electric furnace in the main auditorium. In 1987 the church was re-panelled, padded seats were installed, and carpet laid throughout.
