Historical Information

A meeting house was built around 1859 in Doctor's Cove near Barrington, Nova Scotia, which was to be at the disposal of all preachers, and was called the Barrington Central Meeting House. This building was built in the Meeting House Style. The Meeting House style was typical of Baptist and Congregational congregations around this time frame in Atlantic Canada, due to its simplistic and rather quick-to-build design. The Meeting House style is characterized by a 1 ½ storey wood-frame construction, with either one or two entranceways located on the gable end. This building would have been covered in either wooden clad boards, or cedar shakes, and had a roof covered in wooden shingles. Heating sources during this time consisted of either a wood or coal burning stove, with illumination within the building coming from either whale oil or kerosene oil lamps.

The proper organization of a Baptist congregation at Doctor's Cove was not undertaken until 30 April 1917. Since 1906 and the formation of the United Baptist Convention, the Doctor's Cove United Baptist Church has shared a ministry with Barrington, Oak Park and Bear Point. In 1928, Port LaTour was added to the pastorate.

This church was in existence until at least 1950, when the church building closed and has since (2023) been demolished, between 2007 -2023.
