Historical Information

The Faith Baptist Church, formerly Bible Baptist Independent Baptist Church, can trace its roots back to the 1940’s when Rev William Norton, a graduate of Kingston Bible College, moved to nearby Canso, where he began his work there with the International Christian Mission.

The first building to serve this congregation, as being solely used for religious purposes, was located in a former general store. This building served as both the house of worship and the house for the minister. Later this building was destroyed by fire, which left the congregation in need of a new building.

This led to the congregation purchasing their second property, which was bought from A. N. Whitman. This building was used as both the residence of the pastor and place of worship, until in 1974 when, under the leadership of Rev. Henry Whiteway, the property was sold. This led the congregation to make the decision to move from nearby Canso, to their current facility (2023) in Half Island Cove.

In 1974, the congregation purchased the current building (2023), which was built circa 1960 and originally used as a store and recreational center by Manzer Hendsbee. Renovations were made by Rev. William Freeman. He added living quarters, which were located in the basement of the facility. These living quarters were used until a mobile home could be purchased.

This building is typical of buildings constructed in the mid-twentieth-century, and contains a sanctuary on the main level. The building is one-and-a-half storeys tall. It has changed a bit since its construction, most recently with a large addition on the eave-side, which contains double doors and the main entrance to the building. There has also been an entrance added to the gable end of the building, underneath a small roof-overhang.
