Historical Information
Formerly the Anglican Church in Keels, Newfoundland, this church is a mission started by the Vista Independent Baptist Church congregation in 2018.
Although the building was not originally a place for Baptists to congregate, the building resembles the popular Baptist Meeting House style. This style is characterized by being a 1 ½ wood-frame construction, with either one or two entranceways located on the gable end. One can tell a lot about the beliefs of a congregation by examining their architecture. Often when there are two doors, one located on each side of the front facade, one door was used by the men, and the other by the women.
This building is covered in white vinyl siding, and has two large windows on either side of the main structure. To get into the sanctuary one walks up a set of large concrete stairs. A striking feature of this front facade is the front entranceway. It appears that perhaps the front entranceway, which has a shorter roof line than the rest of the structure, could have been added later, due to the placement of the front door being in line with the body of the main structure. On either side of the door there are two small nooks, tucked in with angled walls, which narrow as you travel from the main structure. On the peak of this roofline, there is a small wooden cross, which appears to be original to this part of the structure.
The interior appears to have changed very little from when the building was originally constructed and still maintains its original paneling, wooden straight back pews, raised pulpit, and chancel area, at the back with curved walls. Another striking feature is that the building still maintains its original hardwood floors.
