Historical Information

Initially itinerant clergy from the Church of England, and a bit later Baptist clergy also travelled from place to place in this region. The Anglican rector of Gagetown began work in 1785 and for several decades performed the rituals of baptism, marriages and burials. By the early 1820s the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (SPG) had sent Rev. Abraham Wood to the Grand Lake pastorate. A Congregationalist church formed initially after the work of the SPG and Anglican missionaries. Later on, by the mid-twenties the Baptist church, the so-called "Canning Church" was serving the individuals of the area. It was later renamed the Jemseg Baptist Church in 1824, and after 1905 called themselves the Jemseg United Baptist Church due to the formation of the United Baptist Convetion of the Maritime Provinces.

The Jemseg United Baptist Church is an example of Victorian Gothic Revival architecture on a Meeting House style church. The Meeting House style of church was a common style amongng Protestant congregations in early to mid-nineteenth century Atlantic Canada. This style is often characterized by its small and rather plain facility, with no steeple, and gothic embellishments. The front entrance was often on the gable end, with either two entrances, one on the left and right sides of the front façade, one meant for the men and the other for women; or a centrally placed doorway.

Some of the most eye-catching features that identify this church as Victorian Gothic Revival architecture are the finials located on the peak, and at one time the corners on the front façade of the structure, as well as on the centrally placed entranceway on the gable end. Another striking feature of this building is the Gothic Revival windows, located on either side of the building as well as on the front façade. The building has maintained much of its original character defining features, although the building has had many facility upgrades, including the installation of vinyl siding on much of the structure. The building also appears to have a new poured concrete foundation.
