Rusagonis United Baptist Church

Rusagonis Baptist Church’s beginnings date all the way back to September 1833, when a group of 21 individuals led by Brother George Garraty (a school teacher from Lincoln) felt the need for a Christian church to be established in Rusagonis.

The original name of the church was the ‘Rushagornish Free Christian Baptist Church’. Since that time, the church has seen many changes, including construction projects, church plants, name changes, and different approaches to ministry.

On November 20, 1997, in order to accommodate a growing ministry, the church congregation relocated to its current location at 4 Whittaker Rd, where they constructed a contemporary, accessible facility, with ample space for various activities. This building is typical for its time in terms of style and architectural detailing. Churches built in this era mark a shift from a place for solely gathering on Sundays to a place that can be used for day-to-day activities. This building is situated in a manner that makes it appear much wider than it is long. There are two main sections of this building, with their gables facing the road, connected by a centrally placed entranceway. The entranceway is situated below the section containing the large saddle-back steeple. The layout of this building, from the front façade resembles the shape of an ‘H’, with three distinctive bays. The two outer bays have five rectangular windows and one Gothic Revival style curved top window. The central bay has three long rectangular windows flanking each side of the double entranceway doors. Above these doors there is an ornamental gable positioned in a way to balance out the structure.
