Historical Information

The date of construction of the Wallbrook Baptist church is forgotten, except for the fact that in 1852, when the Baptist Convention of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island met in annual session at Sackville, a report was received that a new meeting house had been constructed and opened in Wallbrook, Horton, Nova Scotia. The founding pastor for this church was Rev. James Stevens who stayed from 1843 to 1857.

The original style of this building was meeting house, a common style among Baptists in early to mid-nineteenth century Atlantic Canada. This style is often characterized by its small and rather plain facility, with no steeple, and gothic embellishments. The front entrance was often on the gable end, with either two entrances, one on the left and right sides of the front façade, one meant for the men and the other for women; or a centrally placed doorway. In this case there are two doorways, giving a hint to the type of mindset the original congregation had. However, between 1874 and 1875 a steeple tower and porch were added to the building thanks to funds donated to the congregation.

Until 1925, the little Meeting House was used only for Sunday School and other meetings. Beginning in the early 1930’s with an increase of interest in the local area for religious services the church once again began having regular services.

In 1954, the interior of the church was remodeled, with more major renovations taking place in 1967. During the renovations in the 1960’s the church was raised in the air, a new basement was created, and the building was moved onto a new foundation. In the front on the north side about 8 feet wereadded extending across the front under where the steeple had been built in 1874. An addition of 8’ x 12’ was built on the south end. In the 1980’s a vestibule was added to the north side.

This church was part of a pastorate field with Gaspereau and White Rock.

In 2022 the  church was sold and the congregation merged with that of Gaspereau.
