Historical Information

In 1867 the congregation of Glenmont Baptist Church was formed by residents of Glenmont who had their membership transferred from the “mother church”, First Cornwallis Baptist Church at Upper Canard. Later in 1867, the congregation had this church constructed on land purchased from John T. Rand. It is a rather plain wood frame construction, in the meeting house style, a common style among Baptists in early to mid- nineteenth century Atlantic Canada. This style is often characterized by its small and rather plain facility, with no steeple, and gothic embellishments. The front entrance was often on the gable end, with either two entrances one on the left and right sides of the front façade; one meant for the men and the other for women, or a centrally placed doorway.

This building has a single entrance centrally placed on the gable end, with classical embellishments, such as the rectangular windows with label mouldings on the exterior. The front façade is broken up into three bays, with the door centrally placed, with a smaller window on the right side, perhaps added later. Churches of this timeframe and style often featured proportion and symmetry, which is why it is likely that this either a window on the left side of the doorway was covered up or that the one on the right was installed later.

This building retains many of its original features both on the interior and exterior. The exterior walls still have the original cedar shakes and wooden storm door covering the front door. In 1965, many renovations were completed on this building. A pulpit, communion table, chairs offering plates and lamps were donated in memory of a deceased parishioner.
