Historical Information
In September 1867 the building of the Baptist church at Arcadia was contracted, and it was completed in 1868. This section later became the vestry of the church, when the current (2021) structure was dedicated April 10, 1871. The church still stands and is used (2021). Originally, this church had a tall spire (seen in photo 2). The tall spire of the Arcadia Baptist Church can be seen at centre, but the church itself is hidden behind the white house. This photo of the church was taken before 13 May 1927, when the spire was badly damaged by lightning and never replaced.
One of the most eye-catching features of this building is its return eaves and centrally placed steeple on the gable end. A feature that is unique to this building is the type of rounded windows along each side of the structure and in the centre of the tower. The Victorian Gothic influences can be noticed in the architectural detailing on the spire that once sat above the steeple.
In 2009 the building was renamed as New Heights Baptist Church and since 2009 contains congregations of the former Arcadia United Baptist Church, Chebogue United Baptist Church, Rockville United Baptist Church, and Plymouth United Baptist Church. The interior of the old south entrance/north platform sanctuary has been rotated 90* with the platform now against the west wall. Seating is movable comfortable chairs, and access to both the sanctuary and new fellowship hall on north side of the church building is from a covered, paved, vehicle-accessible drive-through and a double door pedestrian entrance.
