Historical Information
The Lockeport Independent Baptist Church was organized in 1940. In 1946 the construction of this meeting house was complete under the leadership of Rev. Henry Whiteway. The work of erecting the building was undertaken by the men of the congregation. They dismantled and moved the Oddfellows Hall that was no longer in use, from Louis Head to Lockeport where it is now situated. The early congregation held their baptisms in the ocean near the breakwater at East Jordan.
The entrance to the building was nearly on the street. In 1982, a new entrance was created and the old one closed in when a small cross-gabled addition was added. A small saddleback steeple was placed on the addition. The original windows were replaced in the early 2000s.
The sanctuary can house over 100 people. The original theatre style seats were replaced by two rows of pews from a Baptist church in New Brunswick for $100 apiece. The walls are covered in panelling and the ceiling was clad with acoustic tiles in 2003. The building was first heated by an oil stove near the front of the sanctuary and is now heated with a hot water system.
This church is known locally as the oldest Independent Baptist church in the regional area of Lockeport.
