Historical Information

In 1886 people from both East Sable and West Sable were crossing the river by boat and the bridge which existed at that time to attend church services. Both this congregation and the one in East Sable were called the Second Sable River Baptist Church and belonged to a circuit which also included Sable River, Louis Head and Rockland.

This church on the west side of the river used to be a community hall. As services began to be held in this structure it became more and more like a church. Later on, Charles Robertson, architect and builder of the East Sable meeting house was employed by the West Sable congregation to remodel this structure to more resemble a church, rather than a community hall. Prior to these remodels in the early twentieth century the building was rather plain and did not have the two-storey enclosed steeple.

Lancet shaped gothic windows with gold and purple stained glass were added to the sides of the structure as well two in the front. Near the peak of the front gable end a stained-glass rosette window was added. Above the front door on the side was an arched gothic window with matching stained glass. The renovations by Robertson were reported to have finished around 1910.

Like other churches of its time, it was heated with a large iron, woodburning stove, using wood that was supplied by Foster Lisk, Sr. There were two aisles with seating along both sides of the room and in the center. A platform at the end of the sanctuary was flanked on each side by choir pews. In front of this platform stood an old pump organ. This building was lit by kerosene lamps hung from the ceiling that were purchased from the old Methodist church in Lockport. The congregation of this church survived until the building was torn down in the 1980’s due to disrepair and an aging congregation. After the building was torn down parishioners went to neighbouring Baptist churches.
