Historical Information

Israel Walker Porter, an Acadia graduate, had a major influence in the creation of the work at Greenland. Early in his ministry, Porter ministered at Bear River. While he ministered there the congregation at Greenland was formed and a small church structure was built. Allen Gibson in “Churches by the Sea” suggests that Tom Milner was the builder and that the land was obtained from Harold Trimper. The deed for the property was granted in 1902, although the appearance and oral tradition of the church suggests it could have been earlier than that. Currently, Bear River Baptist Church owns the property.
