Historical Information

In 1832 the Free Christian Baptist Conference was formed in New Brunswick and in 1838, a church was built in the centre of the Florenceville on the east side of the river. This land was deeded March 22, 1838 for the sum of five shillings. Measuring 10 rods by 10 rods, it included property for the church and cemetery and is located at 8746 Main Street.

In the Union of 1905-06, three streams of Atlantic Baptists came together to form the United Baptist Convention of the Maritime Provinces. In the Florenceville-Bristol area, four churches formed a field, sharing a pastor and a parsonage – Florenceville United Baptist Church (west), East Florenceville United Baptist Church, Bristol United Baptist Church, and Connell United Baptist Church.

In 1912, the East Florenceville church was in need of many repairs so the United Baptists of East Florenceville began constructing a new building on the same site. The building was dedicated in April 1913, costing $5000. In 1920, a furnace and basement were added.

The building burned on February 10, 1939 and a new building was completed by November 1939. Many believed the new building was relatively plain and cheap in comparison to the original grandeur of the previous building, but with only $4000 of insurance funds to work with, it was impossible to match what the building had been before the fire.

In the late 1950s, a large side room was added to the north side of the building. In 1968, a large vestibule was added to the west side of the building. At the same time, the basement was completely remodelled, including moveable wooden-panelled partitions for Sunday School classrooms, tile floor, washroom, kitchenette, and a new oil furnace.

In the early 1970s the sanctuary was remodelled. The upper section of the north wall of the original building was removed and a sliding partition was added so it opened into the side room to be used as an overflow during services.

The building was decommissioned on February 26, 1989. It was sold for $42,000 to McCain Foods and used for their Traffic Department.

In March 1989, the congregation moved to a new location on Burnham Road where it still meets today as True North Baptist Church.
