Historical Information
Under Rev. Peter Crandall's leadership, a church was organized at Waterford in 1809. Allen Gibson’s “Churches by the Sea” details the growth of the body, beginning with just 19 charter members who were scattered along the Digby Neck and islands. Jacob Cornwell, a deacon of the church, constructed a frame house and log house at Waterford as of 1820. It was in these early structures that the tiny congregation began to grow. Later, in 1825, the congregation numbered 136 members. In the same year the church divided, and 73 of the members, who resided on the islands, organized into a separate church and were known as the Brier Island Church, thus leaving 63 members on Digby Neck. By 1880 the original body known as First Digby Neck was made up of three sections: Centreville, Rossway, and Waterford. The current church structure, which has lost visibility, was built and dedicated in 1836 with the tower added in 1883. Architecturally, the church is identical to the Centreville Baptist Church. It has not been worshipped in for several decades and it generally is in shambles.
