Historical Information

The first place of worship in Springfield was built on the opposite side of the road to the present location. The original structure served the congregation for 10 years as both a school and meetinghouse. Services were held initially in the home of Boyd MacNary under the guidance of Rev. Thomas DeLong and Rev. I.E. Bill. In 1832 the first full time pastor, Rev Henry Saunders, was appointed. In 1835, the Baptist Church of Springfield was welcomed into the Baptist Association of Nova Scotia. The present house of worship was constructed in 1867. The carpenter was John Charlton. In 1946 major renovations to the structure included a new platform, choir loft, re-orientation of seating plan, and modifying belfry by adding a ten-foot steeple on a four-sided roof. In 1977, Lawrence Starratt donated a piece of property for the enlargement of the cemetery.
