Historical Information
Weymouth Falls was founded by Rev. Richard Preston who was ordained in London in 1832. The church was later established in 1853. The present church structure at Weymouth Falls was dedicated in 1921. In September of 1921 delegates from the association officiated at the laying of the cornerstone service for the new church structure. It was commonly known as Mount Beulah Church.
The Mount Beulah church is situated on a knoll overlooking the landscape. The structure can be viewed as you approach from across the river bridge.
The most catching detail of this building is how it has retained many, if not all, of its original features, including fancy trim and moulding boards, large stained-glass windows, and interior finishes.
From the History of Digby book, we know that many Black settlers came to this part of Digby County in the late part of the eighteenth century. Many were artisans and skilled tradesmen. This church was most likely constructed by Black settlers of the area who sought to have their own place of worship and a place to show the skill of the community’s workers. One of the most notable members of Digby’s Black population, heavyweight boxer Sam Langford (c. 1884-1953) is from Weymouth and was part of the community that built this church.
