Historical Information

The Westport Baptist Church was organized by Rev. Peter Crandall in 1809. From 1809 to 1825 Crandall served as minister of the Westport Church only to be replaced by Elder Enoch Towner. In 1822, during Crandall’s time as minister of the church, the first Baptist meeting house was built at Westport. A gentleman by the name of Eliphalet Curry was the builder. The old meeting house remained after the new house of worship had been constructed. In 1850, the present Westport Baptist Church structure was opened for worship on Wellington Lane. The church, which is covered with shingles to the ball peak of its steeple spire, is of Gothic style with pointed window arches and a high-pitched roof. The building can fit three hundred persons.
