Historical Information

Under the leadership of Rev. Peter Crandall, of Rhode Island, the Digby Neck Pastorate formed and consisted of four preaching stations: Gulliver's Hole, Trout Cove (Centreville), Sandy Cove and Little River. Crandall’s ministry was concentrated in the Digby County area, where he remained until his passing in 1838. In June of 1836, the church was divided when fifty members were dismissed to form the churches at Little River and Sandy Cove. These would become known as the Second Baptist Church at Digby Neck. In 1841, John Chipman Morse came to this field (First and Second Digby). He was a licentiate of the Aylesford Church. Tradition tells us that the church structure and the residence across from it were both constructed by Morse himself. The land was granted by Mr. Morris Peters in 1802. The structure was a joint venture between Methodists and Baptists and was opened in 1849. A bell tower was added in 1886 and was Greek in style and genre with wooden shingles. Morse served this pastorate from 1849 to 1903.
